THE GOLDEN PALACE IS FOR EVERYONE

CREATIVITAY CIT-TAY
JEANETTE WINTERSON LIVE FROM THE SYDNEY WRITERS' FESTIVAL
“You look at kids…as soon as they can start walking around and talking they want to tell stories, they want to paint, they want to play instruments, they want to sing, it starts straight away. I’ve always felt that we stop that artificially, and then we claim that art and that creativity is something that we impose upon people later, that it’s a kind of elitist activity invented to fill a wet Sunday afternoon, whereas in fact it’s central to the way that we are, to our human expression. When people lived in situations that were much tougher than the ones we live in now, when there was no running water, when you had to grow your food locally or starve, when there was no heating, no washing machines, when people were eking a living back-breakingly from the land, what were they doing? They were singing, they were painting, they were telling stories. It’s absolutely not a product of a rather comfortable, fattened society that’s got new leisure time, quite the contrary.”
